A kupu whakarite (metaphor), especially well-known in the Taranaki region, used to acknowledge someone who is renowned for their strength, resilience and perseverance in seeing to complete a task.

Meaning: you showed resilience and strength
Direct translation: The heart of a lamprey (fresh- water fish that looks similar to an eel). It is said that a lamprey has exceptional stamina as it makes its way upriver from rock to rock, and is renowned for its endurance to swim upriver against great odds.
